Joel was credited as art director on Wild Brain’s first 3D short. Working closely with Co-Director, Gordon Clark, he helped to visualize the color and lighting for Hubert’s Brain. In 2001 the film won the Annie award for Best Animated Short.

Here is a selection of some of the color sketches he painted for the movie. The clip shows how these were translated to the final film.
